How to Increase the Use of Recycled Materials

How do you increase post consumer resin (PCR) content in your finished product without reducing physical properties?

With a goal to improve sustainability, one of our customers wanted to increase the use of recycled materials being used during their injection molding process.

Working closely with the team, Riverdale Global introduced +Restore™, a liquid additive designed to add strength to recycled plastics, into their process.

With +Restore, 100% PCR can be used while maintaining virgin-like physical properties. This allows processors to achieve zero waste, for improved sustainability for plastics.

+Restore mixes through the polymer during processing and improves the polymer chain orientations to improve physical properties. When pigments, glass fibers, or other fillers are added, +Restore also creates strong bonds between these particles and the resin.

INCREASE THE USE OF RECYCLED MATERIALS
Typically, physical properties of PCR are restored to within 1% of virgin material when using +Restore liquid additive. When testing the elasticity of PP, with an LDR (let down ratio) of 0.4%, regrind was restored to within 1% of virgin PP. Generally, increasing the usage level will further improve the results.
INCREASED STRENGTH
An LDR of 0.4% was used in this specific case, and when looking at the impact results, +Restore brought the regrind strength ABOVE virgin PP. This increased strength had no negative effect on flexibility. An improved impact strength can typically be achieved with a usage as low as 0.2%.

SUITED TO ALL PROCESSES

+Restore works equally well in both extrusion and molding processes. The additive will be effective as long as it has had the chance to interact with the polymer in the melt phase.
